Roger Federer’s five year running streak was finally ended as Rafael Nadal finally managed to dethrone him in Wimbledon’s longest match ever lasting just under 5 hours. Nadal won the game 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7. He also became only the second person to win the Wimbledon and French Open in the same year next to Bjorn Borg who achieved this fete in 1980.
The last Spanish athlete to win this title before Nadal was Manolo Santana in 1966. Federer’s had a record streak of 42 games at the All England Club and 65 grass-court runs in total before this match. Nadal on the other hand had been defeated by Federer in last two Wimbledon finals and finally got to take his revenge by winning the championship.
Both players acknowledged each others achievements and skills during the presentation. Federer also assured his fans that we will be back next year for the title.
