No return for Schumacher this year

Ferrari have been quick to end speculation that Michael Schumacher could attempt to make another comeback this year.

Schumacher was set for a sensational return to Ferrari as a replacement for the injured Felipe Massa, however he was forced to abort his comeback at this weekend’s European Grand Prix when scans revealed a neck injury he picked up earlier this year hadn’t healed properly.

With Massa out and Schumacher unable to race Ferrari were forced to turn to test driver Luca Badoer.

Badoer, though, endured a nightmare weekend and finished last in the race.

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has already indicated that they may axe Badoer after Spa. However, Schumacher won’t be in line to replace the Italian should Ferrari decide to give him the chop.

“I’m happy he is training, but what I can absolutely rule out is that Michael can return this year as a racing driver,” Domenicali said.

Although he believes it would’ve been tough for Schumacher after such a long absence, Domenicali insists the German would have done well in Valencia.

“It would have been tough for Michael too, because it’s a difficult track and it’s new,” he added. “Obviously his approach is always aggressive. Would he have done well? I really think so, because he wouldn’t have gone for it if he wasn’t confident. As for how well, I’d be dishonest: I don’t know. However, he would certainly have done well.”
